As your Chief Residents we want to welcome you to Providence and the Alpert Medical School affiliated hospitals. We are very excited that you will be training with us!

We as a program want to support residents in taking time away from residency and getting to participate in the things that bring us joy (weddings, vacations, family reunions, etc.). With that in mind we do our best to get each resident the time off that they need.

This request form is designed to help us match your schedule to your life to the best of our ability. Of note, not every request can be achieved; therefore, we encourage you to prioritize your requests by level of importance so that we can get you the time off that is most important to you.

Please keep in mind that the 12 days around Christmas and New Year's run as a modified "Holiday Schedule". Half of the program works for 6 days around Christmas and then has 6 days off around New Year's, while the other half will have 6 days off around Christmas and then work for the 6 days around New Year's. The 6 days you have off during the Holiday Schedule are in addition to your 3 weeks of vacation. We are NOT taking requests for which Holiday Schedule you would like to work at this time.

COHORT PREFERENCES

Your assigned cohort will set the schedule of your Y blocks for the next three years!

  • Please note that all weekends in Y will be Golden Weekends. For example, if you have a weekend commitment on 3/13-3/14/2027, you should consider ranking Cohort B as your #1 preference.
  • You cannot request vacation during your Y weeks. For example, if you want vacation from 10/20-10/26/2026, you SHOULD NOT rank Cohort A as your #1 preference and instead rank it #4

VACATION REQUESTS

  • PLEASE NOTE: your clinical rotations start 6/24/26 and PGY 1 year ends on 6/23/27
  • Please choose the date that you would like your vacation week to START
  • We will prioritize your first vacation request. Second and third vacation requests may not be guaranteed
  • Vacations are 7 day stretches that encompass 5 weekdays and 1 weekend
  • Vacations occur during elective rotations
  • Two week vacations will require discussion and approval from your residency advisor. If this is approved, your remaining 1 week vacation will NEED to fall in the other half of the year
  • Vacation weeks cannot run into multiple blocks (e.g., vacation from 10/31-11/6 in blocks 5A AND 5B) or be in Y weeks of your cohort
  • As switch days will be Tuesday, please include at least one vacation request that spans Tuesday-Monday. This will help with scheduling your elective time and future emergency coverage weeks

ELECTIVE REQUESTS

Interns will have several 2-week elective experiences, as well as one 4-week elective experience at any of the three Brown affiliated hospitals.

Each site (Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center) has dedicated faculty who offer rewarding electives. Residents tend to choose electives in the medical sub-specialties. We have a mixture of inpatient consult services with the subspecialty fellows and attendings, as well as outpatient electives with subspecialists in their private offices. Here is an outline of available activities, separated by sub-specialty, as well as inpatient or outpatient:

There are 144 Internal Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics interns and residents working at four hospitals in many different capacities. We make every effort to accommodate each resident's personal needs, and we try to make schedule adjustments as necessary throughout the year.

If you have any questions or concerns please feel free to contact the current Chief Residents at 401-444-5990 or by email at IMCHIEFS@Lifespan.org.
