Welcome to the Alpert Medical School of Brown University Internal Medicine Categorical Residency Program!

As your Chief Residents we want to welcome you to Providence and the Alpert Medical School affiliated hospitals. We are very excited that you will be training with us!

The purpose of this letter is to enable you to make some specific schedule requests.

Please keep in mind that the 12 days around Christmas and New Year's run as a modified "Holiday Schedule". Half of the program works for 6 days around Christmas and then has 6 days off around New Year's, while the other half will have 6 days off around Christmas and then work for the 6 days around New Year's. The 6 days you have off during the Holiday Schedule are in addition to your 3 weeks of vacation. We are NOT taking requests for which Holiday Schedule you would like to work at this time.

  1. Vacation: All interns receive three weeks of vacation. One week will be assigned to you during your Geriatrics rotation, usually at the end of that month. Additionally, all interns get the last week in June off at the end of internship (this is an unpaid week off). Again, please do not request Christmas or New Years at this time. We will ask you that later in the year.

Below you will see the start and end dates for our rotations this coming year. Note that they generally do not correspond with the calendar month. Please use this as a guide when requesting vacation time.

We will try to accommodate all requests, and work hard to assure accommodation of your most important date request. You do not need to know all of your vacation dates at this time, however, if you know that you need specific dates off for vacation, please indicate this in the google form.

  2. Electives: All Categorical interns may select two (2) electives at any of the three Brown affiliated hospitals. Each of Rhode Island Hospital, The Miriam Hospital and the Veterans Administration Medical Center have valuable faculty who offer rewarding electives. Residents tend to choose electives in the medical sub-specialties. We have a mixture of inpatient consult services with the subspecialty fellows and attendings, as well as outpatient electives with subspecialists in their private offices. Here is an outline of available activities, separated by sub-specialty, as well as inpatient or outpatient.

Please note that to comply with ACGME Program Requirements, residents must complete 2 outpatient/ambulatory electives over the course of their 3 years of training with our program.

  3. Spouses and Significant Others: As best we are able, we try to coordinate the schedules of spouses and significant others who are both in Brown University residency programs. Please let us know if you have matched with a significant other/spouse, and indicate their department.

There are 144 Internal Medicine and Medicine-Pediatrics interns and residents working at four hospitals in many different capacities. We make every effort to accommodate each resident's personal needs, and we try to make schedule adjustments as necessary throughout the year. So, please...
